The CPC Deluxe HD powered by PrimaLuceLab is often compared to two very different kinds of products: smart telescopes and do-it-yourself personalized telescopes. It is neither. It is a third category, built specifically to combine the strengths of a fully assembled, pre-tested system with the real astronomical performance and control that only a proper telescope, mount, and accessory chain can give you. Before considering a purchase, it’s important to understand exactly where this system sits, and where its limits are.
Smart telescopes solved one problem extremely well: ease of use. They are point-and-shoot devices: point, press a button, get an image. But they trade away visual observing, they have low performance on the Moon and planets, and they leave no room to grow the system over time. On the other end, a fully custom do-it-yourself setup solves the performance and flexibility problem: you choose your mount, your optical design, your accessories. But it requires real expertise to combine components correctly, and getting it wrong is common, especially for newcomers.

The CPC Deluxe HD powered by PrimaLuceLab was designed to sit between these two categories, not as a compromise, but as a specific answer to a specific need: real visual observing, high-resolution planetary and lunar imaging, and automated deep-sky astrophotography, all pre-selected, pre-tested, and fully documented, without requiring years of experience to assemble it correctly. This is why we started from Celestron’s CPC Deluxe HD aplanatic Schmidt-Cassegrain OTA on its alt-azimuth mount, and added a motorized focuser, a field de-rotator, and astrophotography software, optionally paired with our EAGLE computer and a guide scope.
As the comparison below shows, the CPC Deluxe HD powered by PrimaLuceLab is built on the same categories of components you would choose in a custom do-it-yourself setup: guide scope, motorized focuser, computer, rotator, mount, and tripod. The difference is not in what is inside the system, but in the fact that every component has already been selected, tested, and integrated to work together. And because the system runs on open, standard interfaces controlled by PLAY, it still grows with you over time, exactly like a do-it-yourself setup would: new cameras, new accessories, new techniques, without starting over.

It’s also important to know the limits of this solution. The CPC Deluxe HD powered by PrimaLuceLab has a maximum practical exposure time for deep-sky astrophotography: around 3 to 4 minutes per single exposure on the 8″ model, and around 2 to 3 minutes on the 11″ model, both with a 0.7x focal reducer and autoguider. Beyond that, tracking error becomes a limiting factor. If your main goal is the absolute best deep-sky results with longer single exposures, or a completely different optical design, a custom setup on a German equatorial mount remains the right choice.
This system is also not plug-and-play: it requires an initial installation and setup, which is why we provide a dedicated Integration and First Setup manual for each model, together with a complete book covering visual observing, astrophotography, and how to use PLAY.

This is why the CPC Deluxe HD powered by PrimaLuceLab is not a smart telescope, and it is not a do-it-yourself telescope either. It is a real system, built for people who want to grow into astrophotography with confidence, and with a clear path through it.
