Is it possible to take pictures of galaxies, nebulae or star clusters with a telescope also from the light polluted backyard by using narrowband filters? Discover the result of our test comparing the image of a nebula recorded with the same telescope and the same exposition time but from a place with low light pollution and from an area near the city center.<\/p>\r\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We choose to record a picture of the Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) in Cygnus, using a Baader Planetarium 7nm H-Alpha filter, with 600 seconds of exposition time and binning 2&#215;2. The picture has been recorded with Celestron EdgeHD 925 telescope on Avalon-Instruments M-Uno mount with ATIK 16200 monochrome CCD camera, everything controlled by the EAGLE.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width: 100%; max-width: 650px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pIMK7ti5-jE?rel=0\" width=\"300\" height=\"365\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We selected the first location with low light pollution in the first mountain above the italian Po Valley, at a height of 700 meters above sea level). We measured the SQM value (Sky Quality Meter)\u00a0and we had a good value of 20.8.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_1531\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1531\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1531\" src=\"https:\/\/www.primalucelab.com\/wp\/astronomia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/articolo-astrofotografia-inquinamento-luminoso-1.jpg\" alt=\"Astrophotography and light pollution: our telescope under the sky with low light pollution\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1531\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Astrophotography and light pollution: our telescope under the sky with low light pollution<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Then we moved the telescope in a site in the Po Valley, close to our city of Pordenone, with a high level of light pollution. Here we recorded an SQM value of 19.4.<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_1537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1537\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.primalucelab.com\/wp\/astronomia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/articolo-astrofotografia-inquinamento-luminoso-2.jpg\" alt=\"Astrophotography and light pollution: our telescope under the sky with high light pollution\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Astrophotography and light pollution: our telescope under the sky with high light pollution<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After recording both pictures\u00a0(with the same exposition\u00a0time and settings), we applied\u00a0the same histogram stretch to better highlight the nebula and over layered the images, generating the result you can see below:<\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<figure id=\"attachment_1539\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1539\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1539\" src=\"https:\/\/www.primalucelab.com\/wp\/astronomia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/08\/articolo-astrofotografia-inquinamento-luminoso-3.gif\" alt=\"Astrophotography and light pollution: results comparison\" width=\"650\" height=\"529\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Astrophotography and light pollution: results comparison<\/figcaption><\/figure>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can easily see how the image recorded from\u00a0the low light pollution site shows better contrast and visibility of the weaker details.
