{"id":1037,"date":"2017-06-29T08:19:07","date_gmt":"2017-06-29T06:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.primalucelab.com\/astronomy\/blog\/?p=1037"},"modified":"2022-03-01T12:21:06","modified_gmt":"2022-03-01T11:21:06","slug":"star-adventurer-contro-eagle-core-astrofotografia-con-reflex-digitali-star-adventurer-versus-eagle-core-astrophotography-with-dslr-camera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.primalucelab.com\/blog\/star-adventurer-contro-eagle-core-astrofotografia-con-reflex-digitali-star-adventurer-versus-eagle-core-astrophotography-with-dslr-camera\/","title":{"rendered":"Star Adventurer versus EAGLE CORE kit: astrophotography with DSLR camera"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Star Adventurer\u00a0and\u00a0EAGLE CORE\u00a0kit allow you to track\u00a0the apparent motion of the stars in the sky and, if you have a DSLR camera, allow you to record\u00a0long exposures of deep-sky\u00a0objects such as galaxies, nebulae or star clusters.\u00a0But how long? In fact, the longer the exposition\u00a0time that our instrumentation will allow us to have, the &#8220;deeper&#8221; our pictures\u00a0will be, and the better we will record deep-sky\u00a0objects. We then compared the\u00a0Star Adventurer\u00a0and\u00a0EAGLE CORE\u00a0highlighting advantages and disadvantages of each solution using a Nikon D750 DSLR\u00a0camera and\u00a0Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f\/2.8 G ED VR telephoto lens to record\u00a0pictures.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">DSLR\u00a0cameras\u00a0revolutionized digital astrophotography\u00a0and, thanks to the exceptional technological evolution of sensors and image processors, they also greatly perform very long exposures with high ISO sensitivity, still having\u00a0a very low background noise. So they&#8217;re\u00a0also the perfect choice for those who want to perform\u00a0long\u00a0exposure astrophotography without going to the complexity of CCD cooled astronomy camera\u00a0(which nevertheless offer even higher performances). But the camera\u00a0is not enough: in fact, in order to track the apparent motion of objects in the sky, the normal photo tripod is not enough and you need to have a special instrument. Amateur astronomers\u00a0with their telescopes always use equatorial mounts but, starting\u00a0a few years ago, also the &#8220;star trackers&#8221; are used, including the famous\u00a0Star Adventurer\u00a0by SkyWatcher. Essentially a star tracker works like an equatorial mount but:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">1) The star tracker is installed on a normal photo tripod, it&#8217;s small and lightweight so it is easier to transport. But it has a much lower load capacity than a real equatorial mount. This generally means that you can install DSLR camera with telephoto lenses but hardly telescopes (except those that are particularly compact and light).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">2) The equatorial mount\u00a0is larger and heavy but also more stable, so it supports not only real telescopes but also the heaviest telephoto lenses withDSLR camera. On the other hand, they are more difficult to transport even if are available compact models and bags to facilitate transport.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1323\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1323\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1323\" src=\"https:\/\/www.primalucelab.com\/wp\/astronomia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/StarAdventurer-contro-EAGLE-CORE-astrofotografia-con-reflex-digitali_5.jpg\" alt=\"Star Adventurer versus EAGLE CORE kit: on the left the Star Adventurer on photo tripod, to the right the EAGLE CORE kit on EQ5 SynScan equatorial mount\" width=\"650\" height=\"459\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Star Adventurer versus EAGLE CORE kit: on the left the Star Adventurer on photo tripod, to the right the EAGLE CORE kit on EQ5 SynScan equatorial mount<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">3) a star tracker usually has a single axis motor\u00a0(the\u00a0AR one) while the equatorial mount can be motorized in both axes (AR and DEC) and may\u00a0also have an ST4 auto-guide port. Then the equatorial mount can be equipped with an autoguide system that corrects the normal tracking errors of the equatorial mount. Even the Star Adventurer has an autoguide port, but with only the Right Ascension motor, the autoguide works only in this axis and fails to perfectly correct the tracking errors \u00a0(which of course occur also in Declination axis).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">4) Equatorial mounts, especially if they are computerized, cost more than the Star Adventurer but have advanced features such as automatic goto thanks to\u00a0an integrated database of many objects (eg the SkyWatcher equatorial mounts\u00a0have a database of more than 40,000 objects). This allows you to automatically point to the objects we want to photograph, while with a star tracker you need to manually point them\u00a0and then perfectly know the position in the sky.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In order to\u00a0compare the performances of Star Adventurer and EAGLE CORE we moved\u00a0to one of the most beautiful places in the world, the Tre\u00a0Cime\u00a0di\u00a0Lavaredo in the Dolomites having\u00a0with us a Star Adventurer installed on a solid photo tripod with the dedicated equatorial head (that allows for precise polar alignment) and the EAGLE CORE complete kit with SkyWatcher EQ5 equatorial mount.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1319\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1319\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1313\" src=\"https:\/\/www.primalucelab.com\/wp\/astronomia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/StarAdventurer-contro-EAGLE-CORE-astrofotografia-con-reflex-digitali_2.jpg\" alt=\"Star Adventurer versus EAGLE CORE kit: thanks to high transportability of Star Adventurer and EAGLE CORE kit we were able to reach places usually not possible with normal telescopes!\" width=\"650\" height=\"488\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1319\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Star Adventurer versus EAGLE CORE kit: thanks to high transportability of Star Adventurer and EAGLE CORE kit we were able to reach places usually not possible with normal telescopes!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both the Star Adventurer and the EAGLE CORE kit are much more portable than a classic telescopes, so thanks to\u00a0Geoptik transport\u00a0bags, we could walk on the path that connects the Auronzo hut (where we left the car) to Forcella\u00a0Lavaredo that we reached in about 1 hour. So we prepared both instruments and waited for\u00a0astronomical twilight to start astrophotography. It is true that these are not VERY compact tools but they have proved to be easily transportable allowing us to reach fantastic places and with very little light pollution.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1319\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1319\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1312\" src=\"https:\/\/www.primalucelab.com\/wp\/astronomia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/StarAdventurer-contro-EAGLE-CORE-astrofotografia-con-reflex-digitali_1.jpg\" alt=\"Star Adventurer versus EAGLE CORE kit: on Forcella Lavaredo close to Tre Cime di Lavaredo\" width=\"650\" height=\"434\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1319\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Star Adventurer versus EAGLE CORE kit: on Forcella Lavaredo close to Tre Cime di Lavaredo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We started our test by making the most accurate Star Adventurer polar alignment thanks to the dedicated dedicated equatorial wedge. Then\u00a0we installed the Nikon D750 camera with theNikon AF-S 70-200mm f\/2.8 G ED VR\u00a0telephoto lens\u00a0(set at\u00a0200mm f\/4) and started shooting the star Alkaid in the Constellation of the Big Bear (center in the below picture, in the upper right you can see the M51 galaxy, the left galaxy M101). Our StarAdventurer allowed us to record\u00a0up to 2 minutes of exposition time, the 3 minutes picture shows the stars clearly elungated\u00a0(picture below).<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1319\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1319\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1319\" src=\"https:\/\/www.primalucelab.com\/wp\/astronomia\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2017\/06\/StarAdventurer-contro-EAGLE-CORE-astrofotografia-con-reflex-digitali_3.jpg\" alt=\"Star Adventurer versus EAGLE CORE kit: with 3 minutes exposition time the stars looks like trails and the picture is no good!\" width=\"650\" height=\"434\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1319\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Star Adventurer versus EAGLE CORE kit: with 3 minutes exposition time the stars looks like trails and the picture is no good!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We then installed the Nikon D750 withNikon AF-S 70-200mm f\/2.8 G ED VR\u00a0telephoto lens (always set at\u00a0200mm f\/4) on the EQ5 SynScan mount with the EAGLE CORE kit and made a series of longer exposures. The built-in autoguide system allows EAGLE CORE to automatically correct tracking\u00a0errors. Thanks to this system it is possible not only to take longer exposition images\u00a0but also to take a sequence of many photographs that can then be stacked\u00a0together during processing. In this way, we can photograph very weak objects and therefore we wanted to record\u00a0the entire Nebula Veil in the Swan, thanks to\u00a0the huge\u00a0Full Frame (36 x 24mm) sensor of the Nikon D750. We recorded 6 images of 5 minutes each, then\u00a0we stacked\u00a0them to get the result below. EAGLE CORE along with a compact equatorial mount\u00a0is less portable than a Star Adventurer but it offers a very high tracking accuracy, equal to the one\u00a0you can get by a real astrophotography\u00a0telescope. In addition, the use of a computerized equatorial mount\u00a0makes it easy to point the objects to be photographed, which can also be done by connecting EAGLE CORE to the mount\u00a0and using the SkySafari app to point the objects from your smartphone or tablet.
