The autoguide cameras are often divided into two classes: the cheap ones that are not very sensitive and the sensitive ones that are usually expensive. The QHY5L-II monochrome camera change the rules because it offers, at a very cheap price, an high sensitivity sensor with small pixels. This makes it ideal not only as guide camera (thanks to the very compact body and ST4 autoguide port, ST4 guide cable included) but also as a planetary camera. In fact the QHY5L-II can record up to 30 fps (frames per second) at full resolution and 106 fps at a resolution of 640 x 480. This way you can capture brilliant videos and images (with software included in the price) of the planets, moon and Sun.
Technical comment by Filippo: "The QHY5L-II mono camera is the perfect camera for every astrophoto setup. Outstanding as guide camera (I always use it with the PHD Guiding software), I use it often for planetary photography too. In fact, the mono sensor allows the use of IR-pass filter (on Mars or the Moon) or UV-Pass (on Venus) allowing you to get more detail than in the visible part of the spectrum."
The QHY5L-II monochrome camera can be inserted directly into the 31.8mm eyepiece holder of any telescope, even in small guide refractors. The USB cable is plugged into the rear port of the camera and the other end is inserted into the control computer. In the image on the left shows how to connect it to the Eagle control unit. This, being directly installed on the telescope , and then on the mount, has among various advantages the ability to prevent the cables accidentally disconnect since they move with the mount itself. The ST4 cable is plugged into the rear guider port on the camera and into the ST4 guide port of the mount on which you use the camera (in the image a Celestron CGX). In this way, the camera sends the correction signal directly to the mount and it will not need other external interfaces to set up your system.
Compact and sensitive, perfect for autoguiding
The guider corrects automatically tracking errors of the mount during the long exposures required for astrophotography of deep-sky objects. In order to easily find the guide stars and make the process easier and faster, the guide camera must be sensitive, better with small dimensions pixels (in order to allow high resolution and then to guide with greater precision). The QHY5L-II camera offers all of these features, along with a small and compact lightweight body (only 52 grams) that can be directly inserted into the 31.8 mm eyepiece holder of any telescope . Thanks to the integrated ST4 guide port (in the rear part of the the camera, next to the USB 2.0 port) and the guide cable included in the box you can connect the camera directly to the ST4 guide port present in most of the mounts.
Great for planets, Moon and Sun photography
The high sensitivity of the mono sensor makes the QHY5L-II ideal for planets, Moon and sun photography! Connect it to the PC via the included USB cable and turn on the control software included with the camera, you can see these objects in real time on the screen and record images and videos! The small pixel size (3.75 microns per side) allow to obtain very high resolution images and the high number of frames per second (up to 30 fps at full resolution) lets you record videos with many images that, processed with softwares like Registax, bring to better quality final images. The mono sensor is also sensitive to near-infrared and ultraviolet parts of the spectrum. In this way you can shoot in infrared (with IR-pass filter) useful with the Moon and Mars or ultraviolet (with UV-pass filter) on Venus. With these filters the subjects will show more details and you will get better images.
It includes control software
The QHY5L-II comes with EZPlanetary control software for Windows. The software, developed specifically for the QHYCCD cameras, allows you to control all the camera's acquisition parameters, precisely focus the image and record images or videos according to the shutter speed you want to use. This is a light and simple to use software, perfect for both astrophotography beginners and experienced amateur astronomers. The camera also have ASCOM drivers that allow you to control it with softwares like PHD Guiding, MaximDL or AstroArt, both for autoguiding and imaging applications.
