Canon 1300Da astrophotography modified DSLR camera with Baader BCF filter

DSLRs are very often used for astrophotography because they offer large sensor and low electronic noise, all at a great price. But in order to keep a proper color balance in daylight use, DSLRs use a filter placed in front of the sensor that is not completely transparent, especially at longer wavelengths corresponding to red. In astronomical application that is a problem because the most important emission line, the H-alpha (emitted by many nebulae for example) is right in the red part of the spectrum. Our 1300Da camera replaces the original filter with Baader BCF specifically designed for astrophotography, increasing the camera sensitivity and allowing you to take brighter pictures.

 

 

 

Technical comment by Filippo: "DSLR cameras are the perfect choice to start in astrophotography since they offer, at a very low price, a sensor with comparable dimensions of the more expensive CCD cooled cameras. The Canon 1300Da is the cheapest model we modify with the Baader BCF filter thus creating the perfect camera to start imaging deep-sky objects of the Universe like nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies."

 

APS-C sensor with big dimensions

The main advantage of DSLR cameras with respect to the dedicated CCD cameras for astronomy is to have a large sensor, bigger to the one of CCD cameras of comparable price. Below, you can find a comparison of the sensor size of our 1300Da camera APS-C sensor (in red) with the Sony and Kodak sensors installed on many CCD cameras for astronomy, such as Atik (in blue). As a reference we also report the size of a Full Frame sensor which also corresponds to the one of the old film cameras. Notice how the sensor of our 1300Da camera is much larger than the most of astronomy CCD cameras!

Modified filter for more sensitivity

In order to keep a proper color balance in daylight use, DSLRs use a filter placed in front of the sensor that is not completely transparent, especially at longer wavelengths corresponding to red. In astronomical application that is a problem because the most important emission line, the H-alpha (emitted by many nebulae for example) is right in the red part of the spectrum. Our 1300Da camera replaces the original filter with Baader BCF filter specifically designed for astrophotography increasing the camera sensitivity and allowing you to take brighter pictures.

The chart above compares the transmittance of the Baader BCF filter installed on 1300Da (red curve) with the original one of the Canon EOS 1300D (blue curve). For reference we reported in green also the position of the H-alpha line. You can see how from about 550nm original filter decreases transmissivity while our modified filter lets all the light pass up to 700nm, so you can record more easily all the red weak details. The difference is huge considering the H-alpha line where the original filter has a transmissivity of about 30% while the modified one has a transmissivity of about 98%. Our 1300Da, compared to the original Canon EOS 1300D, it's more sensitive.

In our laboratory we perform the 1300D camera modification and we install the astronomical filter (which replaces the standard one). We use special instruments and a clean room to prevent static electricity from damaging the internal components and the dust from depositing on the sensor during modification process.
